Finding Joy in Assessments Again

Assessment Differentiation

The AhaSlides presentation assessment can first be differentiated by the type of poem that the child selects. The child can select a poem from an assortment of poems that range in Lexile levels,  student interest and  complexity of the poem. Some poems have more figurative language and others have less. The goal is for the child to show that they can understand the poem, teach what the poem means to the class, point out poetry features, and tear the poem apart based on the type of figurative language found. Thus, the type of poem that the child gets can meet them at their exact level of learning.

Next, the slides can also be differentiated. The students can receive templates from the teacher or they can select their own. This can help students that need extra support digitally to have the scaffolding that they need. AhaSlides can also be differentiated based on the child’s proficiency in English. If a child needs it in a different language, AhaSlides can accommodate that and will modify the language to be in the primary language spoken by the child (AhaSlides, 2023).  Depending on the teacher, homeschool parent, or school the slides can add an audio  feature, so that the child can pre-record themselves speaking. Having had a child who had selective mutism and was only able to whisper, this feature would have helped him.  It would pick up his whisper and make it louder, so that the whole class could have heard him. It would also have enabled him to record it as many times as he wanted to until he found the perfect one. The presentation aspect would have been done a little differently to accommodate his needs. The same can be done for any child that needs differentiated instruction.
